warmland terms of use
Last updated: September 29, 2026

Who we are
This website is published by Bill Reburn, operating as Warmland Magazine, a sole proprietorship based in Lake Cowichan, British Columbia. In these terms, "we" and "us" mean that business, and "you" means anyone using the site.
Using the site means accepting these terms
Â
By visiting warmlandmagazine.com you agree to these terms, along with our Privacy Policy, Disclaimer, Copyright Notice and User-Generated Content Policy, which form part of them. If you do not agree, please don't use the site.
Â
What we provide
A free online magazine about the Cowichan Lake area, published monthly, alongside an archive, a business directory, a newsletter and advertising space. We may change, add to, or stop publishing any part of it at any time. We aim to keep the site available but we do not guarantee it will be uninterrupted or error-free, and it may be unavailable for maintenance or for reasons outside our control.

Acceptable use
Use the site lawfully and reasonably. Do not attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of it, interfere with its operation, introduce malicious code, scrape or harvest content or contact details by automated means, misrepresent yourself as connected with Warmland Magazine, or use the site to harass anyone or to send unsolicited commercial messages.

We do not inspect, certify or vet the businesses we write about. We are not responsible for what they do or fail to do, and any dealings you have with them are between you and them. Details such as addresses, hours, prices and menus are published in good faith and can change without us knowing.

Content and copyright
Material on this site belongs to us or to our contributors and is protected by copyright. What you may and may not do with it is set out in our Copyright Notice.

Anything you send us
Submissions, photographs, tips and messages are covered by our User-Generated Content Policy, including what you are confirming when you send something and what we may do with it.

Accuracy, safety and third parties
Our Disclaimer sets out the limits of what we can promise about accuracy, business listings, outdoor activities, linked websites and advertising. It is important and worth reading, particularly if you are planning a trip around something you read here.

Advertising
Some content is paid for and is labelled where it appears. Your dealings with any advertiser are between you and them, and we are not party to and not responsible for those arrangements.

Privacy
How we handle personal information is set out in our Privacy Policy. In short: we collect very little, we do not sell it, and you can ask us what we hold.

Limits on our liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential loss arising from your use of this site, and our total liability for any claim connected with the site is limited to one hundred Canadian dollars. Nothing here excludes any liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including for fraud or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.
If something you do causes us a problem

If you break these terms, or publish something through us that you did not have the right to publish, and that results in a claim against us, you agree to cover the reasonable costs and damages that follow from it.

Changes
We may update these terms. The current version is always the one on this page, with the date it was last changed shown at the top. Substantial changes will be noted on the site.

Which law applies
These terms are governed by the laws of British Columbia and the applicable laws of Canada. Any dispute will be dealt with by the courts of British Columbia.

Odds and ends
If any part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still stands. Not enforcing something straight away does not mean we have given it up.

What this site is
Warmland Magazine publishes stories, guides, photographs and listings about Lake Cowichan, Youbou, Honeymoon Bay, Mesachie Lake and the surrounding Cowichan Valley. Everything here is published for general information and enjoyment. It is not professional advice of any kind, and it is not a substitute for checking with the people who actually run things.
Â

We try to get it right, and we will sometimes be wrong
This is a small operation. We check what we publish and we care about being accurate. But opening hours change, businesses close for the season, prices go up, trails wash out, roads close, water levels shift, and events move or get cancelled without much notice. Some of what we publish comes from third parties and we cannot independently verify all of it.
Â
Information on this site may be out of date by the time you read it. Before you drive somewhere, book something, or rely on anything here in a way that would cost you if it turned out to be wrong, check directly with the business, venue, park or organiser. One phone call is worth more than anything we can publish.

If you find something wrong, tell us at -Â hello@warmlandmagazine.com. We would rather know.

Not professional advice
Nothing on this site is legal, financial, medical, safety, real estate, insurance or other professional advice, and nothing here creates a professional or advisory relationship between you and us. If you need advice of that kind, speak to someone qualified to give it.

Businesses, listings and mentions
We write about local businesses because they are part of what makes this area worth visiting. A mention, listing, photograph or write-up is not a recommendation, endorsement, warranty or guarantee of quality, safety, availability, price, licensing, insurance or fitness for any purpose.
Â
We do not inspect, certify or vet the businesses we write about. We are not responsible for what they do or fail to do, and any dealings you have with them are between you and them. Details such as addresses, hours, prices and menus are published in good faith and can change without us knowing.
Â
Â
Outdoor activities
This site describes hiking, tubing, swimming, paddling, fishing, camping, cycling, driving and other outdoor activities in and around Cowichan Lake. Those activities carry real risk, including risk of serious injury or death. River and lake conditions change with season, weather and water level, and wildlife in this area includes black bears, cougars and elk.
Nothing here is a safety assessment, a guarantee of conditions, or a statement that any activity is safe for you. You are responsible for your own decisions, preparation and ability, and for anyone in your care. Check current conditions, obey posted signage and closures, and follow the instructions of operators and park staff. Where an activity is run commercially, follow that operator's rules and waivers - they know their own conditions far better than we do.
Â
Â
Other websites
We link to other websites, social media pages and booking systems because they are useful. We do not control them, we are not responsible for their content, accuracy, privacy practices or security, and a link is not an endorsement. Once you leave this site, their terms apply, not ours.

Â
Advertising and sponsored content
Some of what appears here is paid for. Advertisements, sponsored articles and paid business features are labelled as such where they appear, not only in this policy. Paying for a placement does not buy a favourable review, and we write what we think is true either way.

We are not responsible for the claims, offers, products or services of any advertiser. If an advertiser makes you an offer, your agreement is with them.

Your decisions are your own
You use this site, and act on what you read here, at your own risk. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Warmland Magazine and its publisher are not liable for any loss, injury, disappointment, cost or damage arising from your use of this site or reliance on anything published here, including where information turns out to be inaccurate, incomplete or out of date.
Nothing in this disclaimer limits any liability that cannot be limited under British Columbia or Canadian law.
warmland user-generated content policy
What this covers
Anything you send us or post where we can see it. Photographs and words submitted for publication, story tips, corrections, business information, contest and giveaway entries, replies to our newsletter, and comments or messages on the Warmland Magazine Facebook and Instagram pages.
Â
Comments are not enabled on articles on this website. If that changes, this policy will apply to them too.
Â
Â
What you are telling us when you send something
By sending us material for publication, you confirm that it is yours, that you created it or have the right to supply it, and that publishing it will not infringe anyone else's copyright, privacy or other rights.
Â
If your photograph shows an identifiable person, you confirm you have their permission for it to be published here and on our social accounts. If that person is a child, you confirm you have permission from a parent or guardian. If you are under 19, please have a parent or guardian send it on your behalf.
Â
Â
What we may do with what you send
If we publish your work, we will run it in the magazine, share it on the Warmland Magazine social accounts with your credit attached, and keep it available in the site archive. Old editions of this magazine stay online rather than disappearing, so assume publication here is lasting rather than temporary.
Â
Your work stays yours. We are not taking ownership of it, we will not sell it or pass it to anyone else, and we will not use it in advertising without asking you first. If you want something taken down later, ask us - we will usually say yes, though we cannot always pull material out of things already shared or indexed elsewhere.

We may make small edits for length, clarity, spelling or fit. Anything more substantial than that, we will run past you before it goes out.

What we won't publish
Material that is untrue or damaging about a person or business. Content that is hateful, harassing, threatening, discriminatory or obscene. Anyone else's personal information - home addresses, phone numbers, photographs of people who have not agreed to appear. Anything that is somebody else's work passed off as your own. Advertising or promotional material dressed up as a submission; if you want to advertise, we would be glad to talk about that separately.
Â
We do not have to publish anything, we do not have to explain why we haven't, and we can remove material later if we need to. Deciding not to run something is not a judgement about you or your work.
Â
Â
A word about local businesses
This is a small place and everyone knows everyone. We will not publish complaints, grievances or accusations about named local businesses, whether they arrive as a submission, a newsletter reply or a comment on our social pages. That is partly a legal matter and partly a simple one: an unverified claim about someone's livelihood can do real damage, and we are not in a position to establish who is right.
Â
If you have had a genuinely bad experience somewhere, take it up with the business, or with Consumer Protection BC. We are a magazine, not an arbitrator.
Â
Â
Our social media pages
Comments on our Facebook and Instagram pages are the responsibility of the people who write them and do not represent our views. We moderate those pages and will hide or delete comments that break the rules above, and block accounts that keep doing it. We are not obliged to monitor every comment, but if something is brought to our attention we will deal with it.
Â
Â
Nothing you send is confidential
Please do not send us anything you need kept private or protected as confidential. If you are telling us something in confidence, say so clearly and separately, and we will treat it that way - but do not assume it.
Â
Â
Getting something removed
If something published here is yours and shouldn't be, or shows you and you would rather it didn't, email hello@warmlandmagazine.com. We take that seriously and we act on it quickly.
