The season everything opens for. Markets on both weekend days, farmstands along the roadside, trails that stay dry for once, and enough daylight to fit two things into an evening. It's brief. Use it properly.
off grid • lose the signal
Ride or walk past the signal. There's a long stretch west of here where the phone stops working entirely. Some plan around that. Others come specifically for it, which is arguably the healthier response.
Find the quiet routes.
honour system • bring cash
Follow the farmstands on the roads between here and Duncan - vegetables, fruit and cut flowers, mostly on the honour system. An unattended cash box tells you something about a place.
What's in season.
foam and mud
A touring obstacle run with twenty-five obstacles, mud pits, the world's largest inflatable waterslide, and two and a half million cubic feet of foam. In 2026, over $11,000 was raised for Make-A-Wish Canada.
mud and money
Started in 2014 with thirty-five Jeeps and now runs to around two hundred and fifty 4x4s. Volunteer run throughout, and it has raised over $235,000 for the BC Cancer Foundation, fifty thousand in its best year alone.
Laketown Ranch sits just outside town on Youbou Road and hosts some of the biggest events on the Island - country music, rock, bluegrass, and a weekend of Jeeps raising money for cancer research. Book beds early.

cowichan lake days
The town's own festival, mid-June, and the one weekend of the year when everyone turns out at once. No headliners and no fields to park in - just the community doing what it does, right in the middle of town.
twenty five years
The Cowichan Valley Bluegrass Festival turns twenty five in 2026 - three days at Laketown Ranch with world-class players, free workshops and square dancing. People describe it as a family reunion, which is unusual praise for a festival.
laketown amphitheatre
The concert side of Laketown Ranch. Nickelback headlined in 2025 with The Glorious Sons and Sam Roberts Band - their first Island show in twenty years in a natural amphitheatre built to hold sixteen thousand people.
fourty thousand
Sunfest - Western Canada's largest country music festival, and Vancouver Island's biggest paid event. Fourty thousand people filled the site across 4 days. Seventeen hundred camping spots on site, and they go early.
